The fire was reported just before 6 p.m. at 110 Zoar Ave. off Newport Avenue (Route 1A). The blaze was contained to the kitchen of the one-story home. "It wasn't too bad," Deputy Fire Chief Glenn Livesey said. "It gutted the kitchen." There was smoke damage to the rest of the house. Livesey estimated damage at about $30,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The homeowners were not home at the time of the fire, and a neighbor behind the house on Hillcrest Avenue called the fire in, the deputy chief said. The home is not habitable for the time being, he said. Firefighters laid hose down the long sidestreet to a fire hydrant. Firefighters were tied up at the scene for about two hours.
