This time, city will try to sell it on craigslist
ATTLEBORO - A forlorn 53-year-old fire truck said to be good only for parades or fighting fires in Third World countries is up for sale - again. The city tried to auction it five years ago with a minimum bid of $7,500, but the apparatus sparked no interest, so it was wrapped in plastic and parked. Now in an effort to clear out the unused and unwanted, the city is trying again, but this time the truck will be posted on Craigslist, an Internet marketplace where almost anything can be bought and sold. The 1957 Ward LaFrance pumper still runs, officials say, but sits wasting away under a blue tarp behind fire headquarters on Union Street. The once new and shining piece of equipment proudly used by city firefighters has been out of service for years, and until 2005 was stored in the old South Attleboro Fire Station, safely retired and out of the elements. But that station was sold and the truck wasn't, so it became homeless. City Councilor Richard Conti, chairman of the property committee, said this week the aging engine has fallen in value to $3,000 or less and its uses are limited. "It's appeal is only to collectors who could drive it in parades or to Third World countries who need fire apparatus," he said. Comments:Your Email is your "Member ID"
